Disciplining The Soul :
Know that all the facets of mankind’s disposition are for their benefit – either directly such as the desire for food, or indirectly by preventing harm, such as the capacity for anger. However, when these natural impulses are not moderated it culminates in harm. If the desire for food is excessive it leads to gluttony. Similarly when anger is uncontrolled it leads to transgression.

The aim should be to achieve equilibrium of the soul, to allow the faithful to approach God without distraction. The author addresses many spiritual diseases – such as envy, greed, uncontrolled lust, sexual desire, arrogance, gluttony, anger, stinginess, extravagance, vanity and attachment to this world.

He also discusses the qualities that the seeker of God must acquire – such as love, self-discipline, humility, self-criticism, improvement of character, patience and truthfulness. In a simple yet effective way he shows the wayfarers how to cure their spiritual diseases and acquire the necessary qualities for their journey to Allah. This masterpiece has been divided into thirty chapters to facilitate the reader’s comprehension. Important points are highlighted using anecdotes from the early righteous predecessors.

Bukhari records on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet said, “Your actions alone will not save any of you.” They asked, Messenger of Allah, not even you?, He replied, ‘Not even me, unless, Allah were to envelop me in His mercy. Be firm; steadfast and balanced; and journey [to Allah] in the beginning of the day, the end of the day, and a portion of the latter part of the night. Moderation, moderation! Through this you will attain your goal!”.

He also recorded this Hadith in another place with the wording, ‘This religion is easy, none makes it hard upon himself except that it overwhelms him; therefore be firm, steadfast, and balanced; upon which have glad tidings! Seek help in this by journeying [to Allah] at the beginning of the day, at the end of the day, and a portion of the latter part of night.’

He also records on the authority of Aishah that the Prophet said, Be firm, steadfast, and balanced upon which have glad tidings for indeed actions alone will not cause one to enter Paradise. They asked Messenger of Allah, not even you? He replied, Not even me, unless Allah were to envelop me in His forgiveness and mercy.

He also records on her authority that the Prophet said, Be Firm, steadfast and balanced: know that your actions alone will not be a cause for your entry into Paradise and that the most beloved actions to Allah are those that are done continuously and persistently, even if they be few. These noble ahadith details a great and important principle from which stem many issues related to the journey to Allah while wayfaring along His Path.

Some of the Salaf said, ‘The Hereafter consists either of Allah’s forgiveness or the Fire; and this world is either a source of Allah’s protection or a source of destruction.’ On his deathbed, Muhammad ibn Waasi bid farewell to his companions saying, ‘Peace be upon you, either to the Fire or to the forgiveness of Allah.’

THE REFINEMENT OF CHARACTER BY IBN QUDAMAH AL-MAQDISI [D. 689H]

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” [Qur’an (68): 5]

A believer may face many trials and tribulations that test his faith, patience and endurance.
In a world full of conflict and war, with many also suffering from personal and family
problems, Shaytān causes a person to question many things. If a Muslim is tried with a
difficulty, then the reasons for this are many – including one’s own sin, which arises from
leaving something obligated in Islām or committing an act that is prohibited. Trials are
also a means of Allāh purifying and aiding His servants, ennobling them and granting well-
being through His Wisdom. The most severely of those who were tried were the Prophets
and then those closest to them in following their guidance.
The Companions of Prophet Muhammad men suffered at the hands of their enemies; they
were eventually forced from their homes, leaving their possessions behind. The enemies
multiplied, and on occasions, they were physically overcome and defeated, with many
martyred. The Messenger of Allāhvern himself received an injury while his enemies rejoiced
and his associates despaired. They lived in a constant state of fear, destitution and poverty
– tying rocks to their stomachs out of severe hunger.
The state of hardship causes the servant to turn to Allāh, Mighty and Magnificent. Often
the state of ease, well-being and blessings cause a person to turn away from Allāh. In
tribulations, trials, misfortunes and calamities lay numerous wisdom and benefits, having
differing degrees of relevance, in accordance to the various ranks of people. Some believers
are afflicted with tribulation to such an extent that they end up walking on the earth with
no trace of sin remaining on them.
This amazing work deals with many aspects of trials and tribulations, including realising the
greatness of Allāh, showing humility and patience, increasing in sincerity and servitude for
Allāh, returning to supplication, hoping for expiation of sins and many other benefits. This

Characteristics of the Hypocrites by Imam ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah (PB)
Hypocrisy is a deep-rooted and all-pervading spiritual disease. A person’s heart could be overflowing with it yet be oblivious of it due to its hidden and subtle nature; frequently does it lead a person to think they are acting rightly when in reality he is spreading corruption. It is of two types: major and minor; majority hypocrisy leads to eternal punishment in the lowest depths of Hell; it is to outwardly display faith in Allah, His Angles, His Books, His Messengers, and the last Day whereas inwardly one is devoid of such belief, indeed disbelieving in it. They do not believe that Allah spoke to a man amongst men who He appointed to be Messenger: guiding them by His permission and warning them of His punishments. In the Qur’an, Allah has revealed the intrigues of the hypocrites, He has unveiled their belief, their qualities, and made their goals clear so that the believers can be aware of them. He divided mankind into three groups in the beginning of Surah al-Baqarah: the believer, the disbeliever, and hypocrite. He mentioned four verses concerning the believers, two concerning the disbelievers, and thirteen verses concerning the hypocrites, due to their plenitude and the great harm and tribulation they bring to Islam and the Muslims. The harm they cause to Islam is truly severe for they claim to be Muslims, they claim to aid and support Islam, whereas in reality they are its enemies seeking to destroy it from within, covertly spreading their corruption and ignorance such that the unwary thinks that what they are upon is knowledge and right action. By Allah! How many strongholds of Islam have they destroyed; how many fortresses have they rendered to ruin; how many signposts of Islam have they effected; how many raised flags have they lowered; and how many seeds of doubt have they attempted to sow in order to uproot the religion! Inner Dimensions of the Prayer
Today’s pace of life has created an imbalance in many people’s priorities, especially in diminishing spiritual fulfilment.
